This is the Final Video for the song 'Spectre' by my friends band Marthas Umbrella. I shot Hot air balloons and reflections of the canal in bath myself and edited and abstracted them in after effects / Premiere. I thought the idea of abstracting and reflecting the imagery and creating a surreal mood suited the piece of music. Inspired by various videos I have listed in this blog such as the Wildbeasts video and even the True Detective opening titles.

This was a tester for a different video which didn't go to plan in the end. This features Brad my flatmate (who is not the singer sam) getting bombarded by food which makes quite a funny video. However my plan was too re-shoot the idea of the video but with a more rehearsed serious version which would take inspiration from Radioheads - No Surprises and The Pharcyde - the Drop. Like in the Pharcyde vid the plan was to have Sam the singer, to lip sync the lyrics backwards so when I reversed the video in edit It would appear surreal with the powder/liquids coming off his face. This was not as simple as I anticipated as he needed to rehearse the lip-syncing quite a bit but he was also quite busy with his uni projects and going away at easter. So we kept on pushing back when we were going to shoot the video and ended up being too late and hectic in the last couple of weeks when we got back after easter to organsise time to shoot when I also need at least 2 other people to help with it. I found it frustrating as I was relying on others to be able to make my project work and with time running and had to go back to an earlier idea which was for another song that I could get on with by myself.

This is a classic seminal music video from the 90s directed by the very talented Spike Jonze. Its very impressive the way they learnt all there lyrics backwards which creates a very surreal effect when reversing the video in edit. View the interesting making of here .

True Detective

I love everything about this title sequence from purely its aesthetics to the music and its dark mood which perfectly fits the series. I particually like the use of glitchy filmburns to cut between frames, the slow panning of the camera and the about of depth to the double exposure look.
